colonoscopy is a flexible telescopic examination of the large bowel.
It is performed after bowel preparation which is done at home.
The procedure is done under light sedation as a day case
The principle indications are
- To investigate symptoms of colonic disease.
- To obtain biopsies from lesions seen at colonoscopy or by other
tests such as barium enema.
- To perform therapeutic procedures such as polypectomy and stent
placement.
- To follow up patients with colonic disease in the past such
as polyps or colitis (termed surveylance)
- To screen for asymptomatic disease such as colon polyps.
