Colonoscopy
A colonoscopy is a flexible telescopic examination of the large bowel.

It is performed after bowel preparation which is done at home.

The procedure is done under light sedation as a day case

The principle indications are

  • To investigate symptoms of colonic disease.
  • To obtain biopsies from lesions seen at colonoscopy or by other tests such as barium enema.
  • To perform therapeutic procedures such as polypectomy and stent placement.
  • To follow up patients with colonic disease in the past such as polyps or colitis (termed surveylance)
  • To screen for asymptomatic disease such as colon polyps.
